Specialist digital cameras

Cameras for industrial and scientific applications are offered by specialist manufacturers. These high-performance cameras are designed for specific purposes. The image quality requirements of the applications for which they are designed, using specific techniques under particular imaging conditions, determine the camera designs and are very different to the needs of standard consumer and commercial imaging applications. For example, in some cases the sensors used may not necessarily offer the same resolution as those used in consumer cameras, but the design and performance of the sensor under specific conditions will be optimal. Much emphasis is of course placed upon optical design, as many criteria will be the same as for film cameras and imaging devices for scientific applications.

Industrial cameras may be used for applications as diverse as automated optical inspection, metrology, flat-panel inspection, traffic management, biometrics, three-dimensional imaging and many others for different industries. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) components are also available to be embedded in systems by other manufacturers (embedded OEM). Scientific cameras are designed for extended vision applications, such as digital microscopy, for use in medical and forensic imaging. Surveillance applications require specialist high-resolution cameras with superior performance under low light levels and may use specially designed sensor architecture and advanced image-processing techniques. In digital cameras for astrophotography, the emphasis is on fast frame rates and extremely low noise. As well as the advantages in terms of flexibility and speed offered by digital image sensors, many of these applications use digital image processing extensively to further expand the capabilities of the imaging systems.
